![]() Eye off the Beholder-This could have worked better if it was shorter (though it is actually shorter than Blackened), as it's got some good verse lines, but just goes on too long with very little variation.Ĥ. Way too long (second longest song on the album) and repetitive.ģ. Blackened-Unlike the string sections of the last two openers, this starts with a melodic guitar solo before kicking into another intense thrash opener.Ģ. ![]() Next up will be And Justice For All (I've got some unpopular opinions on that one).ġ. ![]() The intro seems to continue on from Orion before kicking in.ĭefinitely a classic album. Damage Inc.-And from that we go into this heavy tune to end. The second is a total departure, a soft but beautiful instrumental passage. Ori0n-Starts with a more conventional solo in the first half. Leper Messiah-Slightly slower, but still a great tune. Disposable Heroes-Another pounding tune with intense drumming.Ħ. An even darker ballad than Fade to Black, but the mood actually helps with the themes of the song.ĥ. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)-My second fav song on the album. The Thing That Should Not Be-Eh, this one doesnt do much for me, the lone misstep on the album.Ĥ. Master of Puppets-Best song on the album and my fav Metallica song. Battery-Another deceptively soft intro before the metal guitars come in and then we go into a 8o mph speed metal tune that's still insanely catchy.Ģ. This caused the buzz on the band to be so huge that Elektra signed them for the next one, Master of Puppets.ġ. Much better than the followup, and arguably their best album (though the next one is a closer contender). Like the intro it starts with strings and pianos before the guitars kick in, building to a satifsfying crescendo. Creeping Death-Fan favorite tune here, and my fav song here, with memorable riffs and an infectious chorus.Ĩ. Not one of my favorites, but still enjoyable.ħ. Escape-This was supposed to be their attempt at a "commercial" song, but I dont really hear it (aside from maybe the more cleanly sung chorus). Trapped Under Ice-Solid thrash tune that sounds like something from the previous album only a lot heavier. Fade to Black-Metallica's very first ballad, and this gloomy ballad is even more of a departure, at least until the second half when it gets heavier, but still has the dark mood.ĥ. For Whom the Bell Tolls-Epic tune, and the first step away from non-stop thrash.Ĥ. James' voice here sounds a bit more higher.ģ. Ride the Lightning-Excellent opening riff and a great pounding drum sound here. Sounds a lot more angrier and heavier than most of the previous album.Ģ. Fight Fire with Fire-Starts with a deceptively soft string section before kicking into a full on agressive thrash sound. Next we take a look at the album which led them to being signed to Elektra, Ride the Lightningġ. I didnt start listening to Metallica until the 90s, but even I know this was a huge game-changer compared to all of the traditional and commercial metal of the time. This is solid, but probably the least memorable song here, though I do dig how James sings "militia". Metal Militia-There were a lot of "metal anthems" on this album, something that would be dropped by the next album. Along with Whiplash, this is likely one of the most well-known songs here with a iconic chorus.ġ0. Seek and Destroy-Fav song here, love that main riff. No Remorse-Though this does have lyrics, it's more of a showcase for the playing of the band, lots of instrumental sections. Phantom Lord-Another solid thrash song.Ĩ. On a side-note, the PMRC actually atttacked this song for "promoting self-mutilation" (?)ħ. Whiplash-Anthem for headbangers, and arguably one of the most well-known songs on the album. Not their best instrumental, but a decent showcase for what he could do.Ħ. (Anesthesia)-Pulling Teeth-A bass solo by Cliff Burton. Jump in the Fire-Actually more along the lines of traditional (ie, Priest, Maiden) metal here, just rawer.ĥ. Motorbreath-Probably the fastest song on the album, just a full-throttle speed/thrash tune, yet still insanely catchy.Ĥ. Much better than the original "Mechanix" version (both musically and lyrically). ![]() Four Horsemen-A slightly more conventional song here, but still a memorable anthem. Still sounds fresh and exciting 40 years later.Ģ. Hit the Lights-And we come right out the gates with this speedy, almost punkish number.
